During my online research for non-drug based, natural solutions to RLS, I came across some really funny, even downright ludicrous, ideas.
One of them was the idea to keep a bar of soap under the bed sheet! I actually found many members on RLS discussion forums and people on other websites raving about this idea, with some claiming that this had actually worked for them. 127 Call me a snob, but all these only reminded me of the famous circus man P.T. Barnum’s reported statement, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” 128
Ludicrous or not, I felt no harm in trying it 129 – being heckled at as a sucker is far less painful than losing sleep half a dozen times every night. So, without her knowledge, I bought a bar of soap and put it under amma’s bed sheet. It lay there for a few months before she felt its lump one day, discovered it and threw it at me cursing the idiot who had deposited it there.
Unsurprisingly, the bar of soap had absolutely no effect on amma’s RLS.
I guess I’m not a lucky sucker.
