A beautiful amma

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and also in the eye of time.

By the time, if ever, sons realize that their mothers are actually women, their mothers will be fairly old – they will be perhaps in their fifties.

In my case, it was even more pronounced – she was over 70!

Until a few years back, I don’t remember ever realizing that she could have been young at some point in her life, leave alone thinking about how she could have looked in her younger days..

For men as a genre, there are possibly too many competing alternatives when it comes to thoughts about women.

Women perhaps are different. Some years back, my sister had somehow dug up a photograph of amma and appa in their youth – wow, amma looked really beautiful (and appa, rather handsome).

Fig 3: Amma, circa 1960

I have half a mind to go around digging up other vintage photos of amma and appa – certainly sounds like a memorable and fun thing to do.
